Meow Feedback... Datyar - TT Heights - Nolta Trek
The chill that hit us at Datyar prompted CATS to pull on all the layers they had brought with them. However, a sumptous packed breakfast accompanied by hot masala chai served courtey Atulaya at Datyar warmed many a heart and belly. The views were breathtaking from the open verandah of Atulaya. That's were the easiest part ended!
Led by two guides provided by Atulaya, we set ourselves for the first leg of the journey from Datyar towards Timber Trail Heights in Banasar. Though originally we were supposed to take a shorter but much steeper, tougher (and slightly riskier) trek, given there were few kids and some first timers with us, a last minute decision was taken to take a longer but relatively easier path to Banasar.
As usually happens, the whole group of 32 automatically divided into groups as per their fitness, speed and other personal reasons. I had the opportunity to ask CAT Gurinder as to why he was literally running towards the top? His response had me in splits, 'If I slow down, I will simply fall backwards!'
It was fun all the way, being chased by the cows, exchanging MEOWs with a little cat, trying hands at farming, spotting the toy train going to Shimla in the backdrop, being laughed at by the locals, 'Here comes another pack of urbanites!' It was simply great to be out in the lap of Mother Nature again.
Unfortunate part was that despite having two guides, three sub groups lost the way and had to trek longer and harder to find their way back to the road! I will never forget the call I had from CAT Uday with a little concern in his voice, 'Have you come across the hay stacks yet!'
We all finally managed to converge at the terrace of Timber Trail Heights to have a quick drink. We took a break longer than we should have at this point. Nevertheless, this is where the downhill journey started along a dusty and at times treacherous trek. Infact, all of us had to keep our eyes glued to the track in order to see where our paws were landing!
Despite the various trips and falls we were having along the narrow path, there was plenty of laughter too. As CAT Rita slipped, I instinctively said whilst pulling her up by her sleeve, 'Careful Rita or we would end up looking for you in the farm below.' CAT Gurinder broke into his typical Brit-English-Punjabi laced Hindi, 'Sure otherwise we would be saying, Oh dekho woh chauthhe khet mein payi hai'
Another good thing we did on the way down is that we ensured the whole group stayed together to avoid the problem of getting lost again. Sensing that legs were giving way, I tried to call our bus driver and the resort manager to send our bus up to fetch us. Unfortunately, the mobile signals also conspired against us. CATS had no choice but to keep walking down in a hope that the phone would start working after the next bend ahead.
Now this is another matter that the way down simply refused to end and the phones refused to work! It was like having school kids in the car who impatiently ask at every turn, 'Aur kitni door?' CAT Navpreet and CAT Rahat had connived to pull me around the bushes for a sound beating. I was lucky they did not find a stick!
Whilst only about 1.5km was left, there came a local bus shuttling down the road. Our resolve to finish the trek broke when we found one of our guides sitting in the bus! We all hitch hicked our way back to our base for lunch. CATS, the picture of politeness that we are, thanked the bus driver and the conductor from the bottom of our hearts. Whilst I was doing the head count to ensure we had not lost anyone on the way, I heard the conductor asking, 'Paise??' Oh dear, we were too tired and too hungry by that time to care that we were being fleeced by the conductor for the tickets he did not give us!
Best part was hot food served to us in the sprawling lawns of Yorks Health Resort in Nolta. The simple vegetarian fare was nothing less than a feast for the hungry CATS, who pounced upon the kill. We put our feet up with a hot cuppa masala chai after a well deserved and required late lunch. There was pin drop silence on the way back to Chandigarh in the bus :-)
There are a few things which came to the fore on this trek. It set apart the experienced trekkers from the beginners. It taught us to stay together rather than walking away in our own little sub-groups. It has encouraged us to develop methods of signposting the route for others to follow. It's very easy to loose time by having longer, unscheduled and unexpected breaks. It has taught us what trekking is about; unpredictable adventure, sometimes at the expense of our knees and calves!
See you all on the next trek on 23rd of Dec at Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary.

Trek 4: Datyar - TT Heights - Nolta
Surrounded by wooded hills, the kaushalya river meanders its way between the two hills. Hills where the clouds pause to rest and time stands still. The air, full of pine scent and bird song, Timber Trail takes one's breath away. A world of spectacular sunsets, nature paints the sky in unbelievable colours. And as darkness creeps in, the distant lights of Chandigarh take over to create the shimmering magic of a million stars.
This would be our starting point of Datyar, a village just 300kms ahead of Timber Trail Resorts on the main Kalka-Shimla highway. Our journey would take us down the valley to Kaushalya river and then will begin the steep climb to the TT Heights through the villages of Paneva, Sandhog, Banasar (TT Heights), Jodhpur, Pagharni and then finally to Yorks Health Resort based in Nolta, where we will have our lunch and then board the bus to reach back to Chandigarh.
Interesting aspect of this trek is that we will be starting from Himachal Pradesh but finishing off in Haryana!

CATS in the news
Meow.... Feedback on Chandigarh Heritage & History
It was also interesting to see how Lord Budhha changed form over the centuries. If Oriental Budhha was slim and slender, then Budhha sculptures made under Punjabi influence was well built, sporting curly hair and moustache! Paintings by Thakar Singh and Sobha Singh left everyone speechless. Most wondrous painting was the one where no matter which angle you viewed it from, the foot of Guru Nanak Dev always pointed in your direction!
Highlight of the day was visiting the manuscript section where CATS had to remove their shoes and cover their heads prior to entering. There was something pious and spiritual in the air, even though we were not in a religious place of worship. It was humbling to be surrounded by The Geeta, The Janam Sakhi, The Holy Quran and Guru Granth Sahib concurrently. I, for sure felt ashamed of bartering the spiritual guidance diligently provided to us over the centuries in the pursuit of life.
Father of an 8yrs old son Ratan, CAT Tejinder said that he had spent all his life in Chandigarh but had never visited the Museum before. CAT Jolly also made similar observations, 'This is the first time that I am getting to see what's inside. The only time we were brought to the museum was to attend the painting competitions during school time!'
When asked what he learnt from the trip to the museum today, 6 year old Aman innocently remarked, 'We should not throw away statues and figurines in the water!' Our artistically challenged geek CAT Jay thought that the cows surrounding Lord Krishna in a painting resembled mice. CAT Pradeep betrayed his profession when he could not take his eyes of a painting playing with light at the ABS organised 'Rajasthan to UK' painting exhibition, where all the painters were from Rajasthan and had attained further training in UK. It was interesting to see painting done on post cards, a modern art work reflecting the five elements of life, painting done in sepian photography style.
CATS were required to cover their heads in order to be able to view the Holy Adi Granth and other religious manuscripts. Since I did not have enough time to inform each member individually, I would also like to register our gratitude to The Rotary Club of Chandigarh for giving us their caps on loan at a short notice.
Rumbling bellies were taken care of by Mr VN Singh, Director Chandigarh Museum and a couple of fellow CATS. The sight of samosas gave jitters to a few health conscious CATS to begin with, but it did not take long before many were found taking second helpings of yummy hot samosas with steaming cups of masala chai to beat the chill in the air and the noise in the belly. An absolutely animated and educative narration by Mr Singh made the trip a memorable one for CATS.
All the CATS, as usual, chipped in to help run the day without hitches.
We finished the day off with the brilliantly conceptualised and executed 'Light and Sound Show'.

CATS listening in rapt attention to the story behind the making of our War Memorial... with our War Heroes still standing tall behind the CATS...
Meow.. Feedback on Chandigarh Heritage Walk
Around 35 CATS assembled well in time at the Open Hand Memorial, everyone was quite keen to don the Heritage Walk T-Shirts handed out at the time of registration to commemorate the walk. Such was the unanimous solidarity of the CATS that 'one size fits all' T-Shirts were found merrily hugging the biceps, bellies and knees of the CATS.
CAT Pradeep gave a brief insight into the design of the Open Hand sprinkled with anecdotes from Corbusier's life in the 'Trench of Consideration', before marching off towards the War Memorial. As CATS were touching the finishing line, Kittens were found polishing off their refreshment boxes in earnest, since they indulged in their own little race to be the first.
Whilst others Heritage Walkers toddled off after having a bite, CATS spiralled down towards the War Memorial where CAT Pradeep once again offered the inside story of the making of our War Memorial. Arnav was the youngest CAT at 3 and the honour of being the oldest, as always, went to Mr DV Bhatia.
On the way back from the War Memorial, CATS made an unscheduled stop by the fencing around Vidhan Sabha building and learnt many more interesting facts about our City Beautiful. For example - how many of you know that Chandigarh has had a war memorial since the 60's, designed by Corbusier himself. Do you know that Secretariat has a roof top garden?
In fact, such was the curiosity amongst the CATS to learn more about Chandigarh that it was decided to organise a trip specifically around the Capitol Complex itself in the near future.
All in all, a refreshingly knowledgeable morning for all CATS.

CHANDIGARH HERITAGE WALK
Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage, are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa’s Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals of Europe and Latin America make up our world’s heritage. Could Chandigarh be next on the list?
Located in sector 1 within the Capitol Complex, Open hand, Chandigarh’s official emblem is one of the most significant monuments of the city. Designed by Le Corbusier in the form of a hand made from metal sheets that rotate like a weathercock, it also indicates the wind direction. This giant hand is 14 metres high and weighs around 50 tonnes. It conveys the social message of peace and unity that is "open to give & open to receive." Capitol Complex in Chandigarh, consists of three main edifices; the Secretariat, the Legislative Assembly and the High Court stand majestically representing themselves as the temples of democracy of free India. There was a plan to build a fourth building also, which was to be the Raj Bhavan, as in the Governor's Palace but later changed to the Museum of Knowledge. However, it has not come into existence as yet.
A unique citizens’ initiative led by The Indian Express and set up by Chandigarh Administration, Chandigarh War Memorial is dedicated to those who laid down their lives defending the country since independence. The names of about 8,500 martyrs from the Army, the Navy and the Air Force belonging to Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh are inscribed on its black granite plaques. The memorial, designed by students of the Chandigarh College of Architecture, at the Bougainvillea Garden in Sector 3 is the largest in the country recording the names of post-Independence martyrs. The memorial is semi-circular and has a 22-ft high central sculpture. Unlike other memorials, which are constructed by the armed forces or the government, the Chandigarh War Memorial has been funded entirely through contributions from schoolchildren, housewives to NRIs, corporates etc.
Covering a total area of 20 acres, Chandigarh Bougainvillea Park is located in sector 3. This garden exhibits different varieties of bougainvillea flowers. Set up in 1976, you can spot about 65 distinctive varieties of Bougainvillea shrubs planted there. The park contains creepers that cover a large collection of bowers, arches, pavilions and arcades alongside the fitness tracks and pathways.
Where else, but in Chandigarh, could you and your children just stroll past your City’s heritage and your Nation’s history through a lovely garden in 15 minutes?

Great Himalayan National Park - Trek Facts
(Tirthan Wildlife Sanctuary - Great Himalayan National Park)
Very few things are more beautiful than the loveliness of the woods before sunrise and this is where CATS is organizing its fourth trek. Trees have from time immemorial been closely associated with magic. These stout members of the vegetable kingdom may stand for as long as a thousand years, and tower far above our mortal heads. An untouched forest, studded with trees of all ages, sizes and types, is more than a mysterious, magical place – it is a vast energy reservoir of nature. Forests once stood tall over the entire landmass of our planet.
Today, they are fighting what can be called as their last battle for survival. Onslaught of humanity is undermining the health of forest ecosystems at the peril of its own future generations.
This amazing trek at the Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) seeks to expose the minds to the mystique of forests as vibrant ecosystems. Another aim of this program is to make the participants realise the critical role of forests in maintaining the viability and vitality of earth as a living planet.
History is replete with the examples of individuals who even gave up thrones for the bliss of a forest. Time spent in exploring a forest is an investment into one’s future. It can also be a wonderfully different way to learn about the realities of nature that constitute the foundation of human existence. The Program at GHNP exposes the participants to physical and intellectual challenges posed by a forest while also respecting their personal limits. It also seeks to enable them to discover, understand and enjoy the incredible charisma of nature.

CATS on Wheels
World Tourism Day - Cycling Event
It's World Tourism Day tomorrow and CATS are being invited to participate in the Cycling Event taking place tomorrow morning with the international tourists. The peddling off time is 7am and we should be able to go home by 8am. Bring your kids along too in their school uniform and just drop them to their schools in time. Cats can easily reach home in time to have a quick shower before heading towards their offices.
07:00 am - Cycle Tourism Rally - Starting point is the Fragrance of Sector 36, where International Tourists will be participating. The rally will end at Sector 22 Market, Chandigarh.
It's very much manageable and I think it would be nice to demonstrate our support to Mr Vivek Atray, the CAT in proxy who got us off the ground.
Go on CATS, let's see some paws on the road tomorrow.
As our fellow CAT AP would say, 'Sangataan ne hum-humma ke pahunchan di kirpaalta karni' !!
Please do call Assistant Manager of STEPS, Deepti on 9216256333 if you wish to participate.
Disclaimer: This is a STEPS organised event and all CATS would be participating individually.
Kodak Moment for CATS
None of the CATS can possibly forget the animated chat he had with us for nearly half an hour. He talked about the times when he himself used to trek up from Kalka/Parwanoo to Kasauli or trek down from Solan to Kasauli. Though he claimed to have failing eye sight, but he surely enquired why one of the CATS was wearing so many rings on her fingers!! He can still tell which wild animal is peeping through his window in the mornings. He might have become hard of hearing but can recognise a non-Indian accent in no time. Advancing years might have made the body frail, but the brain beneath that skull cap is ticking away like ever before.
And there was so much more that he shared.... which we refuse to share with the CATS who did not accompany us on this trek to Kasauli!!
Rahul, the caring son, noticed his father getting tired of all the CATS who just kept pussy footing through the door. Politely, he offered to show us around their cottage instead. He kept pointing out the details pertaining to the photos, paintings and furniture around the public areas of their house and answered each query patiently. CATS were finally waived off with an autographed book by the legend himself, Not a Nice Man to Know: The Best of Khushwant Singh. A treasure indeed for the CATS library.
Thank You Rahul for letting us have a peek in your home and allowing us to steal a few minutes from the life of your father. We shall treasure these memories forever.
Supreet.
CATS spring a surprise
And the excitement was well deserved as they happened to walk into the house of noted author and journalist Mr Khushwant Singh and his son, Mr. Rahul Singh, who were there in their home in Kasauli.
Much to their delight they were ushered with great courtesy and respect and all the 20 of them had the opportunity to meet with these two great writers of our times.
And they got one of his latest books, Not a Nice Man to Know: The Best of Khushwant Singh duly autographed by him for the CATS library.
The trekkers included the youngest one being 10 years old and the oldest (nay, the youngest) Mr. D.V. Bhatia.
Congratulations. Meow
Must bring RUCK-SACK for KASAULI trek
CATS are therefore requested that they MUST BRING a ruck-sack or a sling bag or a bum-bag with them.
A plastic carry would cause more hinderance. Please bring something which you can sling over your shoulders for your own comfort during the trekking. Also bring a little bin liner to carry your rubbish back with you, in accordance with the 'No Litter' policy of CATS.

WORD OF CAUTION
Since this is a bit high altitude trek, so we would advise everybody to join this
trek only when they are in sound physical condition. Being a hilly terrain this will
demand some resistance from you. Secondly as we all know that Kasauli is very notorious for unexpected rains so we would advise everybody to be prepared for the thunder showers. Thirdly because of the rains, the trekking path sometimes gets slippery and treacherous, so do expect some slips and falls.
Kasauli Trek
On the side of the main highway that connects Kalka to Shimla ; the town of Jabli lies curled along the heights of the first major row of hills. It is from here that we will be starting our Trekking. The Trek will pass through small villages and hamlets. Jabli - Gharkal trek is approximately 6 km and Gharkal - Kasauli is exactly 3 km.
Kasauli town takes its name from the village of Kasul that has since merged with the fringes of the town. Kasauli itself seems to live in a delightful time wrap that belongs to a century now gone. Its narrow roads wander up and down the hillside and offer some of the finest views of the area. Standing majestically above all the lower hills is the peak of Choor Chandni. One vantage position for the views is Monkey Point, which has a temple dedicated to Hanumanji. The town is divided into upper mall and the lower mall, which are lined with town’s old residences. The lower section holds tress of Chir, Pine, Himalayan Oak and Robust Horse – chestnuts and higher up the hill comes the majesty of the Cedars.
The town’s colonial ambience is reinforced by gabled houses with charming facades
and neat little gardens with beds of Geraniums and Hydrangea. The picture is completed by slim paths slide past the orchards of Plum and Apricot.

Meow...Feedback on Nepli Trek
The CATS (as I would like to call every member of CATS) nimble-footed walked gracefully in the narrow jungle tracks...silently...in sojourn with their own self.
The young ones helped the elders negotiate the curves and humps, while the children discovered a new closeness with their parents.
For many young parents, who remain busy throughout in the fast-paced world of mundane activities, this trek with their children was another eye opener, as they found new friends.
A software engineer, J.K. Menon thanked "for helping me become the best friend of my daughter Oorja".
For the always-young-at-heart former bureaucrat D.V. Bhatia and his wife Dr. Nirmal Bhatia, "it was a great learning experience for both of us".
Fang from China who has made Ludhiana his home, gave 11 out of 10 for the trek for the experience that it provided.
Sanjay learnt the message of protecting and respecting Nature by keeping all the toffee wrappers in his pocket during the hike rather than throwing carelessly in the jungle, while Ronnie carried his own little rubbish bag with him.
Hip Hip Hooray to all of you. Or "Three Meows" to all of you as Mr Vivek Atray sends his cheers to all.
And there were 98 of them...each one of them bringing back their own sweet memories and learnings from this trek...and discovering themselves indeed. CJ

Ist Trek: Grand Success
Our special thanks to everyone, especially Mr. Vivek Atray, Director Tourism, Mr. Ishwar Singh, Director, Forests Department, and the Chandigarh Institute of Hotel Management for organising the breakfast. We also owe thanks to Mr. D.S. Bedi, Principal, Shivalik Public School of Mohali who lent us two buses for the transportation of the CATS members.
And no wonder, Supreet Dhiman deserves all the kudos who was working out the minutest details of the trek for the last one week, and even could not catch a wink the night before.
We request everyone, whosoever took any photograph of the event, to send in the pix on email so that we can share with others. We shall also welcome your comments.
There had been requests from the people to have a trek every fourth Sunday of the month. Good. We shall definitely come up with the calendar and keep you informed.
Trekking is indeed the most lively outdoor experience that teaches you team spirit, leadership, and more significantly, respect for Nature.
Till next time...cheers! CJ
Get Ready for Action
Let's remember that this is not a Sunday PICNIC. This is a trek in which each one of us has to join to make this expedition a success. It is a rough nature trail, so be ready to experience the outdoors, and enjoy the Nature in its prestine glory.
We must mention that all of us hereby indemnify the Chandigarh Administration, the organisers at CATS, and STEPS, from any accidental injury, trips and falls, or any untoward incident, and we are joining in this trip at our own free will.
We are grateful that many of you have volunteered to take care of morning registration at the hotel, first-aid duties during the trek, supervising the breakfast, as well as being the group leaders.
We are assigning group leaders for every 20 odd members, and shall therefore appreciate your full cooperation and support in sticking with your group, and follow only the prescribed trek without any digression.
We are also planning some fun activities for the participants at the Inspection Bungalow.
We shall appreciate your cooperation...and make it an enjoyable experience for everyone.

Trek to Nepli Forest
NEPLI FOREST (Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary)
The first trek of CATS is a nature trail within Chandigarh, which passes through the woods, hill slope, around water bodies with a gentle gradient.
Apart from being an idyllic location for a quick getaway from city life, Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary offers a great opportunity to raise our awareness about the floral and faunal heritage of our city. You are very likely to spot an odd peacock, cuckoos, night jars, mynas, tree pies etc flying off a Khair, Phulai, Raeru, Semal, Kendu tree. Kids would enjoy seeing a jackal, wild boar, spotted deer or a sambhar amongst others in its natural habitat and do keep an eye open for the reptiles you may actually want to avoid!

The CATS has the support of Chandigarh Tourism department, and was formally inaugurated by the Director Tourism & Public Relations of UT Administration, Mr. Vivek Atray, on 18th August 2007, at Hotel Chandigarh Beckons.
